1. What is ‘Shopify Markets’?

Shopify Markets is a cross-border management tool that simplifies global eCommerce for merchants. It gives merchants everything they need to sell worldwide from one Shopify store.

2. Who can use Shopify Markets?

Looking to expand worldwide? If you’re a Shopify merchant on Basic, Shopify, Advanced, and Plus plans, you can access Shopify Markets.

Please note that Shopify Payments is required for both local currencies and payment options.

3. How does it work?

Shopify Markets allows you to create a custom eCommerce experience for buyers in different countries or regions, all from the Shopify admin.

Specifically, it enables you to:

  • Optimise your store’s domain and SEO to your selected markets to drive more visitors (and sales!)

  • Apply over 130 local currency and pricing settings by your chosen markets.

  • Create content and product catalogues that a tailored to your local audience’s requirements and language.

  • Deliver a localised checkout experience, with payment methods that work out of the box and applicable duties and import taxes collected.

  • Seamlessly manage cross-border fulfilment and shipping.

  • Liability and risk support and management.

  • Centralised control for every market you operate in from the Shopify admin with a consolidated dashboard for analysing the performance of each market.

4. What are the benefits of using Shopify Markets?

“At blubolt, we’ve recommended Shopify Markets to our clients as an efficient and cost-effective way to expand across borders,” says Richard Ayles, Head of Development at blubolt. “This includes recent projects for retailers like Kenro, the one-stop shop for photographic accessories, and G.H. Bass, a premium footwear brand.”

More generally speaking, the core benefits of Shopify Markets are:

  • One store. Multiple countries. To make life easier, all aspects of cross-border selling via Shopify Markets are managed centrally in your Shopify admin.

  • Guidance instead of guesswork. Launching a cross-border operation can be overwhelming, so the advantage of Shopify Markets is that it’s a one-stop-shop where you can rest assured that you haven't missed any key tasks! It cost-effectively manages all the cross-border complexity, from localising your storefronts and tallying duties and taxes to adhering to regulations and sorting shipping.

  • Localised buyer experiences. By customising the eCommerce experience to the market - from language and currency to traffic from the specific region - new customers are far more likely to trust (and therefore purchase from) your brand.

  • Efficient expansion. Although cross-border selling generates more work, Shopify Markets does allow you to manage everything within one dashboard, meaning that you can scale up more efficiently.

  • New horizons overnight. Spied a new international opportunity? Shopify Markets does allow you to go global faster as it’s an off-the-shelf solution so you’ll be up and running in days rather than months.

5. How much does it cost?

With a Shopify subscription, the majority of the features are free.

However, for those features that incur a charge, the following transaction fee-based pricing model applies:

  • When using Shopify Payments to calculate duties and import taxes, you’ll be charged a 0.85% fee per order. If using a different payment provider, this increases to a 1.5% fee. Please note that currently, duties and import taxes calculation is only available to Shopify Advanced and Plus merchants.

  • When using Shopify Payments to convert currency, a 2.0% fee (or 1.5% in the USA) will be applied per order.

6. How do I get started with Shopify Markets?

Shopify admin. If you’re already a Shopify merchant, head over to the Settings section of your Shopify admin.

  • Add. From there, select “Add market” to begin.

  • Activate. Then activate a market for the country/region you wish to target with a localised buying experience.

  • Enabled features. Once the above step is complete, you’ll see a host of features automatically enabled. For example, this includes local currency, URL subfolders, and Storefront redirects or recommendations via the Geolocation app.

  • Optimise. Now that you’ve got a handle on the basics optimise your market-specific settings for the best possible result.

  • Inside tips. To get the best setup for Markets, take on board the hints offered in the Recommendations.
