The truth about AI & ecommerce data.
AI will not fix bad ecommerce data. It will just make bad data easier to summarise.
That sounds slightly blunt, but I think it is the right place to start. Claude, attribution tools and dashboards can all help ecommerce teams move faster. They can tidy reports, compare channels, spot patterns and make weekly trading meetings feel less like a scramble.
But they all depend on the same thing: the quality of the data underneath.
Why fragmented data causes reporting blind spots.
This matters because ecommerce reporting is usually stitched together from different places. Shopify gives you orders, revenue, customers, products, stock and discounts. GA4 gives you behavioural events and acquisition data. Microsoft Clarity helps you see clicks, scroll depth and hesitation. Attribution tools try to explain which channels helped create the sale.
Shopify is clear that discrepancies can happen between Shopify Analytics and third-party tools such as Google Analytics because of browser behaviour, privacy settings, cookies, JavaScript, session definitions and blocking. Read more details at Shopify Help: Analytics discrepancies.
Its marketing reports can also help you understand referrers, interactions and attribution models, but sales attributed to marketing only include trackable marketing activity, such as campaigns and activity using UTM parameters. Read more details at Shopify Help: Marketing reports.
The importance of clean UTMs & trackable campaigns.
That is the important bit. Trackable.
If your UTMs are inconsistent, email flows are not tagged properly, checkout events are missing, payment gateways are self-referring, or a cookie management platform is blocking the wrong scripts, the reporting story becomes weaker. Claude can still produce a neat summary, but it cannot know what failed to fire unless you tell it.
The same is true for attribution tools. They can compare models and help you think beyond last click. But if the journey was not tracked properly, the tool is comparing an incomplete picture.
GA4 can capture ecommerce events such as product views, add-to-cart actions, checkout starts and purchases, but only when those events are implemented properly. Check the developer documentation at Google Analytics: Measure ecommerce for more details. Microsoft Clarity can show visible friction through heatmaps and session recordings, but it will not resolve poor campaign tagging or prove the commercial role of a channel on its own.
A data quality checklist for ecommerce teams.
So before using Claude as part of a weekly trading workflow, I would ask a few boring but important questions:
- Are Shopify orders and revenue directionally aligned with finance?
- Are GA4 purchases and revenue close enough to Shopify to be useful?
- Are core ecommerce events firing across view item, add to cart, cart, checkout and purchase?
- Has the CMP and consent mode setup been tested properly?
- Are UTMs consistent across paid, email, affiliates and organic social?
- Are payment providers and app redirects handled correctly in referrals?
- Does the dashboard show gaps, delays or data quality notes?
This is not about slowing teams down. It is about avoiding confident nonsense.
How to actually use AI for ecommerce trading.
Claude is still useful here. Ask it to compare Shopify and GA4. Ask it to find unassigned campaigns, missing events, odd channel movements and places where the evidence does not support the conclusion. Ask it to separate facts from assumptions and recommend the next check.
Used like that, AI can save real time. It can help ecommerce directors, trading managers and merchandisers get into the right questions faster.
But the order matters. Clean up the data foundation first. Then use Claude, attribution tools and dashboards to make better decisions from it.
Otherwise, you are just building a more polished way to be wrong.
