Shopify Migration FAQs

How long does a typical Shopify Plus migration take?

Most Shopify Plus migrations take between 12 and 20 weeks, although the timeline will depend on the complexity of your existing ecommerce platform, the number of products, integrations and any bespoke functionality required.

At blubolt, we start by understanding your existing technology, customer journeys and commercial priorities before agreeing a realistic migration plan.
We’ll map out each stage, from discovery and design through to development, data migration, testing and launch, giving your team clear visibility of what’s happening and when.

Our focus is on delivering a smooth transition to Shopify Plus while making sure your new store is ready to support long-term growth.

Will migrating to Shopify Plus affect our SEO rankings and organic traffic?

Protecting your organic search performance is a key part of our Shopify Plus migration process.

While some short-term fluctuations in Google rankings and organic traffic are possible following any ecommerce migration, our approach is designed to minimise disruption and protect the visibility you’ve already built.

We’ll review your existing SEO performance, map important URLs, implement redirects and preserve key on-page content, metadata and structured data wherever appropriate.

Following launch, we’ll monitor search visibility, indexing and organic traffic to identify and address any issues quickly.
It’s not simply about moving your existing SEO performance to Shopify Plus. We’ll also look for opportunities to improve your site’s technical foundations, content structure and visibility across traditional and AI-powered search.

Can we migrate to Shopify Plus during our peak trading period?

Yes, although we’d generally recommend scheduling your Shopify Plus launch outside your busiest trading periods wherever possible.

For many ecommerce brands, peak trading brings increased traffic, promotional activity and greater commercial pressure. Introducing a major platform change during this time can create unnecessary risk.

That doesn’t mean your migration project needs to stop. Discovery, design, development and testing can all progress while your existing store continues trading.

We’ll work with your team to plan a launch around your commercial calendar, allowing enough time for testing, data validation and any final adjustments.
The priority is to protect your trading performance while making sure your new Shopify store launches at the right time for your business.

What happens to customer accounts, passwords and order history when migrating to Shopify Plus?

We aim to make the transition to Shopify Plus as straightforward as possible for both your business and your customers.

As part of the migration, we’ll review your existing customer data, including account details, saved addresses and order history, to establish what can be transferred and how it should be managed within Shopify.

Existing customer passwords generally cannot be migrated directly from another ecommerce platform. However, Shopify’s newer customer accounts support passwordless sign-in using an email verification code, removing the need for customers to create another password.

Where legacy customer accounts or bespoke authentication systems are required, we’ll agree the appropriate approach as part of the migration.

Our focus is on protecting customer data, preserving accessible purchase history wherever possible and creating a straightforward account experience that gives returning customers confidence in your new store.

Can we migrate to Shopify Plus without redesigning our existing website?

Yes. Migrating to Shopify Plus doesn’t necessarily mean you need to redesign your entire ecommerce website.

If your existing design and customer experience are working well, we can focus on recreating or adapting those elements within Shopify while improving the underlying technology, performance and functionality.

However, a platform migration is also a good opportunity to review what’s working and where improvements could make a difference. We’ll use customer behaviour, analytics and conversion data to identify opportunities to simplify journeys, improve usability and remove barriers to purchase.

At blubolt, we’ll help you decide whether a straightforward migration, a targeted design refresh or a complete redesign is the right approach for your business.

The aim isn’t to change things for the sake of it. It’s to make sure your investment in Shopify Plus delivers measurable improvements to the customer experience and supports long-term ecommerce growth.
